Is Your Old Cell Phone Gathering Dust?

CogitationWith new and better cell phones being made all the time, folks are upgrading at a fairly rapid rate. What do you do with your old cell phones? I’ve been guilty of just giving it to my daughter to play with. You can sell your phone if it isn’t too old to stores that sell used or refurbished cell phones.

I have discovered a much better use for your old cell phone that is both socially and economically responsible and wonderfully charitable.

Cell Phones for Life, Inc. is an organization that takes your discarded cell phones and turns them into a much needed tool for the elderly, disabled and domestically battered women. These phones are sent out to shelters after being received, cleared out, and refurbished. The company pays for shipping both from you and to the person in need.

The contribution is also tax deductable. These phones are for emergency use only. Their mission statement is on their website and it really makes sense. They have given away phones in almost every state now.

The company will also show you how to set up a cell phone drive if you are really feeling like getting involved. There are other organizations for this purpose but this one seemed to have the best program. I think this is the best use of your old cell phone and plan to donate a couple I have laying around collecting dust.

Thanks Jendi and Erin for your comments. Yes, I've heard that too Jendi about 911. Go Erin! Excellent!
  • I LOVE this! I am about to get a new phone, so I am totally going to donate mine.
  • I've heard about this before and think it is a great idea.
I'm pretty sure that as long as the battery works anyone can dial 911 - even if they don't have a cell phone plan.

Thanks Debbie! Good to know they went to good use!
  • Amy - great info here! How awesome to give resources to people who need them!!!

Like Angie, our phones were toys for awhile - then I saw a box at Best Buy for donating phones and that's where they ended up. I'd much rather someone refurbish and use them than to have them lying around my house anyway!!!

  • Thank you for this idea! Our old cell phones are currently play toys for the kids, but it sounds like there is a much better use for them!!
