Could the future of the EMS (Emergency Response System) be alerting us on our cell phones and not just television and radio? Motorola has applied for a patent for this very capability on one of it’s phones.

In the meantime, a community college in Lansing, MI has just such a system in place for it’s students. The program is called LCCText and it will alert students of tornadoes, incliment weather or school closings due to these events. There is no charge for this service to Lansing Community College students, but standard texting rates may apply according to the service provider.

LCC states it could take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to get the text to students once the ERS has been activated in the case of weather warnings or alerts.
