I read a very sad news article today. A Toronto teen who crashed his car died recently. It is reported he was reaching for his ringing cell phone in his pocket when he lost control of his vehicle. The news is full of such stories right now. Crashes related to cell phone use are rampant.
Studies show just how dangerous cell phones and driving are. Distraction from cell phone use while driving extends a driver’s reaction as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit (University of Utah). The number one source of driver inattention is of a wireless device (Virginia Tech). Drivers that use cell phones are four times as likely to get into serious crashes enough to injure themselves (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).
Lawmakers are stepping up when it comes to the issue of cell phones in our vehicles. Five states now ban handheld cell phone use for all drivers. Thirteen states now ban texting for all drivers. Most people agree texting is downright crazy while driving but it is done nonetheless. I admit I have on occasion looked at a received text while driving but I do have my passenger respond for me. I realize even this was stupid and careless. I have considered getting a Bluetooth device but I’m aware that would only increase my cell phone use in my car. I don’t want to be another deadly statistic.
What about you? Do you drive and talk or text? Do you feel the laws are encroaching on your rights? Do you think the laws should be tougher? Let’s hear your thoughts.
